New Saddle Day

48 years of cycling and I’ve not ridden a saddle with a cut-out until today.

I started riding in 1977 and never struggled with saddles as some do. Shoes yes, but not saddles. I could probably sit on a plywood board and be happy. Nonetheless, the upholstery on the old Fabric Ultimate Flat saddle started to fail and so a more modern saddle with a cutout was tried. After two rides and 80 miles, its clear that it should have been done sooner.

Pictured is the wider L3 version of the Selle Italia SLR Carbon Superflow. Here are the specs…

  • Advertised Weight: 122 g (± 8%)
  • Actual Weight: 125 g
  • Width: 145mm
  • Length: 242mm
  • Stack: 50 mm (AI sourced, unconfirmed)
  • Rails: 7 mm × 9 mm
  • List Price: US $379
  • Street Price: $290 @ TreeFortBikes.com

The nose is a full 4 cm shorter than my old saddle. I thought the extra length would be missed but found that not to be the case. In fact, its nice to have the nose out of the way.

Padding is minimal. It’s hard and doesn’t flex much, or as much as the saddle it replaced.

~2.7 oz were saved over the old saddle.

Time will tell but so far so good and I don’t foresee any problems.
